Hotel Urashima

Hotel Urashima is a famous hotel in Nachi-Katsuura town. The best hot spring inn in the town can be reached by a dedicated ferry or shuttle bus. Built on the vast, scenic grounds of the Noroshiyama peninsula, the hotel comprises of four buildings, the Mountaintop Building (Sanjoukan), the Sunrise Building (Nisshokan), the Water’s Edge Building (Nagisakan) and the Main Building, each with views of the sun setting behind the mountains of Kumano. One of its attractions is that guests can enjoy a spa tour of various, top-quality hot springs right within the hotel’s domain, starting with the Boki-do cave bath which literally translates to “the cave that makes you forget about home” and was named so by Lord Yorimichi Tokugawa who found the hot spring so comforting that it made him not want to return home. After enjoying a tour of the hot springs to their hearts’ content, guests can indulge in a variety of buffet meals using Nachi-Katsuura’s local ingredients such as raw tuna or kaiseki cuisine (traditional multi-course meal) prepared by the head chef. Hotel Urashima has a long history with Nachi-Katsuura and is an inn that every visitor to the area should stay at at least once.

A port town Minshuku (guest house) run by the third-generation couple from Nachi-Katsuura. The couple are passionate about having visitors experience the delicious foods of their hometown and the many dishes that showcase the food culture of Nachi-Katsuura are the biggest attraction of this Minshuku. Indulge yourself in dishes that make the most of the local ingredients that bless Nachi-Katsuura, be it from land or sea, including tuna dishes such as raw tuna sashimi and grilled kama (fish collar). The selection of local Wakayama sake, chosen by the innkeepers who are also qualified sake sommeliers, is another attraction. Should you have an interest in sake, you will definitely enjoy tasting sake aged at ice temperature and listening to the introductions of the breweries by the innkeepers who are well versed in Wakayama’s local sake. Cherishing the Minshuku culture that has been an integral part to the history of Nachi-Katsuura while also continuously considering its future, the husband-and-wife team presents a new form of hospitality to its guests. Inimitable by larger hotels or guest houses, enjoy an experience that can only be had in a small, historic Minshuku.
