Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple【World Heritage Site】
Magnificent and Historical Temple
Seiganto-ji Temple is in line with Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine buildings. It was originally the Kannon Hall of the shrine-temple complex until Shintoism and Buddhism Separation Decree in 1868. Most of the temple located next to shrine were demolished except for Seiganto-ji Temple. During that period, Seiganto-ji Temple were deserted and not functioned as a temple until 1874. The building itself were preserved seeing Seiganto-ji Temple is the oldest temple in Kumano Area and the first temple of Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, the pilgrimage of thirty-three Buddhist temple throughout the Kansai region. In 2004, Seiganto-ji Temple was listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other locations, under the name “Sacred Site and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”.

ACCESS: Take Nachisan line bus depart from Kii-Katsuura Station (approx. 30min),
and walk along the shrine front approach stairs for 20min
